To determine whether your medical school is accredited and eligible for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination), you can follow these steps:

1. Check with ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)

  • The ECFMG certifies international medical graduates (IMGs) to ensure their qualifications to take the USMLE and practice medicine in the U.S. Starting in 2024, medical graduates must be from schools accredited by an agency recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) to be eligible for ECFMG certification.
  • To check if your medical school is accredited for the USMLE, visit the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDMS) website.

Steps:

  • Go to the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • Search for your medical school by name or country.
  • On your school’s profile page, look for the “Sponsor Notes” section. If your school is eligible for USMLE and ECFMG certification, it will have a note mentioning this.
  • If your school is accredited by a WFME-recognized body, this will also be mentioned in the profile.

2. Contact the ECFMG

  • If you’re unsure about the details listed or need confirmation, contact ECFMG directly to inquire about your school’s eligibility for the USMLE. You can also visit the ECFMG website for more information.

3. Check with Your Medical School

  • You can also contact your medical school administration directly to ask if the institution is recognized for ECFMG certification and USMLE eligibility.

These are the most reliable methods to confirm if your medical school qualifies you for the USMLE.

If your medical school appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDMS) but there are no Sponsor Notes related to ECFMG or USMLE eligibility, it may mean one of the following:

1. Your School May Not Be Recognized for USMLE/ECFMG Certification

  • The absence of Sponsor Notes likely indicates that your medical school is not yet recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for USMLE eligibility.
  • You should verify whether the school is accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). Starting in 2024, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates (IMGs) will only be available to graduates of schools accredited by a WFME-recognized accrediting agency.

2. School’s Recognition is Pending or Not Updated

  • It’s possible that your school’s accreditation status is in process or has not yet been updated in the World Directory. Schools sometimes undergo changes in accreditation status, and it might take time for these updates to reflect.

3. Limited Accreditation

  • Some schools may only be recognized for certain programs or in specific contexts but might not yet have met all the criteria for full ECFMG or USMLE eligibility.

What You Should Do:

a. Contact the ECFMG

  • Reach out to the ECFMG directly to inquire about the specific status of your medical school. They can provide more clarity on why Sponsor Notes are missing and whether there are any pending actions regarding your school’s recognition.

Contact ECFMG:

  • Visit their website for specific contact details or use their online inquiry form.

b. Contact Your Medical School

  • Ask your school’s administration if they are working on obtaining accreditation by a WFME-recognized accrediting body. Schools might be in the process of applying for or renewing accreditation.

c. Check WFME Accreditation Status

  • Visit the WFME website to see if your medical school’s accrediting body is recognized. You can also inquire whether your school is working toward achieving this status.

If your medical school is not yet accredited or recognized for USMLE eligibility, you might want to consider transferring to a school that is accredited by a WFME-recognized agency. This is crucial if you plan to take the USMLE and practice medicine in the U.S.
